For trade fairs and the international sales team at Lufthansa Technik, we developed a novel augmented reality application in close collaboration with the Connectivity Solutions division of Lufthansa Technik AG. The app enables users to experience a complex B2B product digitally.
Lufthansa Technik develops tailored connectivity solutions for airlines. These frequently cover satellite communication installations – elaborate add-ons on the hull of modern passenger planes that enable the passengers to enjoy easy Internet access in the cabin.
The challenges faced by the sales team: These complex and material-intensive modifications on the plane are difficult to visually communicate to potential customers. What’s more, the transportation of the exhibits to trade fairs or business meeting worldwide is extremely complicated and costly.
Our task was therefore to answer the question: How is it possible to better illustrate the product and its advantages using digital media?
Our answer: augmented reality
We quickly came up with this idea. As we see it, there are lots of AR applications out there that offer little added value – the technology is often the focus and the added value takes the back burner. In this case, however, the technology was the perfect suitable solution. And Lufthansa Technik was immediately convinced, too.
From proof of concept to final app
A whole flood of questions to our project team rolled in at first: Is the technology advanced enough for its use with customers or at a trade fair? How can we deal with the huge amount of complex CAD data? Does the application work on a sample hull piece under the fair’s lighting conditions and the resulting reflections? How long does the battery last when the iPad is in constant use at a trade fair?
We were able to convince the Lconnect team von der Notwendigkeit of the necessity to validate a technical concept. We systematically reviewed numerous questions and pondered all possibilities. In the end, it was clear: GO Lconnect AR app. Validierung überzeugen – systematisch prüften wir zahlreiche Fragestellungen und Unwägbarkeiten ab. Am Ende hieß es ganz klar „GO Lconnect AR App“.
The path to the final app using agile methods
In nearly three months, we developed the concept and the final application. Thanks to the open way of working and curiosity of the Lconnect team, we were able to finalize a stable, ingenious app in short and intensive design and development sprints. The app is embedded within the entire installation of a sample hull – both for trade fairs and as a stand-alone experience. The reduced user interface offers space for the virtual 3D objects of the satellite communication installation. An onion model enables the user to dive into deeper layered structure elements of the plane.
„The very proactive team headed by Matthias did a great job and realized our AR application in just nine weeks from scratch. Just great and a lot of fun.“
